Western Australia - Too Many Chiefs - Not Enough Indians!
Read Sunday Times Article - No to secret speed camera locations.
The last two weeks has seen confusion in the WA community as senior police run hot and then cold on the idea of secret speed camera locations. Everyone seems to have an idea on how to fix the road toll. The Office of Road Safety who seem to be "off with the fairies" want 30km/h speed limits not just on local roads, to quote the head of the governments Office of Road Safety, but on "any road where there was a chance a car could hit a pedestrian". What next? Are we going back to walking in front of cars with red flags and lanterns?
The governments own statistics show that speed cameras are doing nothing to stop the road toll. Speed cameras caught 2766 drivers in WA on 10th July 2005. On the same day on year later, only half as many drivers 1283 were caught speeding, but the road toll in still soaring! Of all speeding offences caught on speed cameras 42% of drivers are in the lowest bracket of offence and the tolerance for getting a ticket in this state is only 1%.
The cause and effect are so very simple. It's all about money!
First the very well funded RTA was scrapped in Western Australia. Then the Police Traffic Branch was scrapped and amalgamated with general police duties. (That is when all the police motorcycles left the streets)
Now you have hoons going stupid on our roads all night long. Darn, why aren't these speed cameras doing anything? Because only dedicated traffic patrol officers on the road in cars and on motorcycles night and day can crack down on hoons and leave that 42% of speed camera ticketed descent drivers alone.
"Get rid of the Indians and all you have left are hoons on the streets and a bunch of confused chiefs and a rising road toll."
You get what you pay for Mr. Alan Carpenter - Premier WA
